We had come to the end of some larger projects and also had a little time away from the workshop. Just a little break and there was a bit of a feeling of what do we make next when we got back this week. The bench seat was designed and created quite quickly, after the 'What will we make next question' was asked. Inspired by a stack of recycled oregon sitting in the corner, flicking through a furniture book and previously wanting to make a seat for entry ways or mud rooms, we were quite happy with the decision.
The book had used the truss design concept in a work table for the authors green house. We settled on a bench seat. The truss is a very strong structure, that's why engineers and builders love them, so the light looking frame should have no trouble with some heavier built bodies. The basic structure could work for a much longer bench, a hall table, desk or outdoor table setting.
The old oregon timber, came up well after running it through the jointer and thicknesser and rounding of the edges to make sitting a little more comfortable. The pine base has been finished in a Japanese Black stain which allows the grain still to shine through, but allows the oregon top to be the highlight.
After the project was done, there was general agreement that we should make use of the basic design in some other pieces, just no firm plans on what pieces yet.
