When you go to a timber yard, you often come home with a few boards that you're not sure what you will make out of them. Too nice to leave behind, but not certain of what they will become. If you wait a while though and ponder the possibilities, something usually begins to take shape in your head. This example sees two thin, highly featured but less than flat blackbutt boards making the journey back to the workshop and waiting for inspiration. They called for some thoughtful design to both show off their features, but also correct some issues. We are thrilled with the result!
The rib structure strengthens and supports the light weight top and ties it to the lower support plank. It gives an airy look while also providing the much needed structure the top needs. the spotted gum legs add some weight and substance. We made the legs easily removable from the top which meant that a single person can transport the table home and assemble it.

The basic design should lend itself nicely to other pieces and there are already some early drawings of a desk in the sketch book.
